What gsm non woven bag should I choose, and why do cheap ones tear?

Written by AntheM Loo, founder of AALY Packaging in Melaka. Fabric weight is the one number on a non woven bag quotation that most buyers skip, and it is the number that decides whether the bag gets reused or splits on its second trip.

1What gsm non woven bag should I choose?

For a branded non woven bag that gets reused, choose new 100gsm fabric. That is the weight AALY uses for every non woven bag we supply, and it carries 10kg. A lot of what circulates in the Malaysian market is 75 to 80gsm, and much of it is old imported stock.

The practical rule is simple: compare gsm before you compare price. Two quotations for an A4 non woven bag can look like the same product and differ in fabric weight, and the lighter one is usually the cheaper one for exactly that reason.

2What does gsm mean on a non woven bag?

Gsm means grams per square metre. It is the weight of the fabric, and on a non woven bag it is the specification that most separates a bag that lasts from one that does not. A higher gsm means more fabric in every square metre, so the bag feels thicker and holds its shape better.

Gsm describes the fabric, not the size, the print or the handles. Two bags of the same size and the same print can still be very different products if one is made from 100gsm fabric and the other from 75gsm. That is why the number belongs on every quotation you compare.

3Why do some non woven bags tear so easily?

Non woven bags tear easily when the fabric is old stock, not because the material is weak. A significant share of the fabric in the Malaysian market is imported, often not new material, or held in storage long enough that it has started to oxidise before it ever reaches a buyer. Oxidised fabric loses strength, and that is when bags split.

This is why so many buyers believe non woven bags tear easily. They are describing their real experience, but the cause is the stock, not the material. The same material at the right weight, made from new fabric, behaves completely differently.

4Is 100gsm worth it over 75 or 80gsm?

Yes, 100gsm is worth it when the bag carries your logo, because a bag that tears in front of a customer costs more than the fabric saved. Every non woven bag AALY supplies is 100gsm new fabric and carries 10kg without an issue.

Think of it this way: a bag that is 20 percent cheaper and 25 percent lighter is not a better deal, it is a different product. A bag that gets reused keeps showing your brand every time it leaves the house. A bag that splits on its second trip goes in the bin with your logo on it.

5How do I check the gsm before I order?

Ask every supplier to state the gsm and whether the fabric is new, in writing on the quotation. A quotation that leaves out the gsm makes the price impossible to compare. Then feel the fabric before you commit: a lighter fabric feels thinner in the hand.

AALY sends a similar sample free of charge so you can feel the fabric yourself, and your own design is confirmed against your artwork. If you do want a mock-up sample of your own bag, it takes 5 days. Either way you know what you are buying before production starts.

6Does a heavier fabric change the price?

Yes, fabric weight is one of the things that moves the price of a non woven bag, together with size, artwork and quantity. That is why a cheaper quotation often turns out to be a lighter fabric rather than a better deal.

AALY publishes a starting price so buyers have a fixed reference point: from RM1.50 per piece for an A4 non woven bag (28 × 33 × 8 cm, 100gsm), 1-colour print on one side, 1,000 pieces, shipped in 3 to 5 days. Other sizes and quantities are quoted, with West Malaysia delivery free and built into the price.

7What sizes come in 100gsm fabric?

Every size of non woven bag AALY makes uses 100gsm new fabric, so size and fabric weight are separate choices. The A4 non woven bag measures 28 cm wide, 33 cm high and 8 cm at the base, and it is the size behind our published non woven price.

Other sizes are made to order. Send the dimensions you need, width, height and base, and the quotation will be for those exact measurements in 100gsm fabric.

8What happens if some bags in my order come out wrong?

If a bag in an AALY order comes out wrong because of a mistake on our side, we replace it one for one at no cost. Brand-new fabric with quality guaranteed is part of the AALY promise, together with fast and accurate lead times and clear communication.

Before production starts, AALY checks the size, material, colour and artwork with you. Printed colour can shift slightly from one production batch to the next, so we match it to the reference you approve.

9Which bags does the gsm question apply to?

The gsm question applies to bags made from non woven fabric. At AALY that means the non woven bag, the laminated non woven bag and the cooler bag, which is non woven based. Old non woven stock is where the tearing problem comes from.

PP woven and canvas bags are different materials. A PP woven bag is the stiffer, heavier-duty carrier, and a canvas bag is cotton. If you are not sure which material you are comparing, start with our guide on woven and non woven bags.

What does gsm mean?

At AALY Malaysia, gsm means grams per square metre. It is the weight of the fabric. A higher gsm means thicker fabric that holds its shape better.

Why does my non woven bag tear?

AALY in Malaysia traces most tearing to old stock. Imported fabric held too long starts to oxidise and loses strength before it reaches you. New fabric at 100gsm does not have this problem.

How much weight can a non woven bag carry?

Every AALY bag in Malaysia carries 10kg, non woven included. That holds for our 100gsm new fabric. Lighter or older fabric may not.

Is 80gsm or 100gsm better?

AALY in Malaysia recommends 100gsm for branded bags. It is heavier, holds its shape and carries 10kg. A cheaper 80gsm quotation is usually a lighter product, not a better deal.
